Ministerial Nomination: Kogi Senator Kneels Down Before Governor Bello Sparks Outrage
A video of Senator Isah Jibrin, representing Kogi East, kneeling down to thank Governor Yahaya Bello for nominating Shaibu Abubakar-Audu, son of the late Abubakar Audu, for a ministerial position has gone viral on social media.
The video shows the senator expressing his gratitude to the governor for rewarding the late Audu’s sacrifice.
Abubakar Audu was the first civilian governor of Kogi state and a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He died in 2015 shortly after the announcement of the election results on November 22, 2015, where he was seeking re-election as governor.
In the video, Governor Bello is heard telling Senator Jibrin that the nomination of Abubakar-Audu was a gesture of appreciation for his late father’s contribution to the state and the party.
He said: “For all the sacrifices. I am rewarding Prince Abubakar Audu for all his sacrifices, too (possibly pointing to Shaibu, who was not visible in the video), I have no loss, I gain plenty. To God be the glory.”
The senator replied: “You are over rewarding us.”
The video has sparked a lot of reactions on social media, as some users criticized the senator for kneeling down to the governor, while others praised him for being humble and respectful.
Some of the reactions are:
@Chika: “This is politics. The senator is playing smart. He knows that the governor has influence and power. He is trying to secure his future and position.”
@Tunde: “This is sycophancy and bootlicking. The senator is betraying his constituents and his oath of office. He is supposed to be a lawmaker, not a praise-singer.”
@Maryam: “This is culture and tradition. The senator is following the norms of his people. He is kneeling down to show respect and gratitude to an elder and a benefactor.”
@Oluwaseun: “This is shameful. A senator kneeling down to a governor for a ministerial nomination. What happened to merit and competence?”
@Bashir: “This is humility and respect. The senator is showing appreciation to the governor for honoring his late mentor and leader. There is nothing wrong with this.”
