How to Get a Free Debit Card That Also Serves as Your NIN Card from Your Bank

Do you want to have a debit card that also doubles as your national identity card? If yes, then you are in luck. The Nigerian government has approved a new policy that allows commercial banks to issue multipurpose cards that can serve both functions at no extra cost.

This was announced by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said the policy was part of the efforts to integrate the National Identity Number (NIN) with other services and platforms.

He also said that the card users’ privacy and confidentiality would be protected by a nondisclosure agreement between NIMC and CBN.

To get your free card, all you need to do is to apply at your bank and indicate that you want a multipurpose card.

The bank will then verify your details with the NIMC database and print your card on the spot.

You can use your card for any transaction that requires a debit card or a NIN.

The policy comes amid allegations that Pantami and Sabiu “Tunde” Yusuf, Buhari’s personal secretary, were involved in granting licences for broadcast frequencies in the 600MHz spectrum band by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to their cronies and associates in the Aso Rock Villa, cabals, as well as a close ally of the “president-elect”, Bola Tinubu.

SaharaReporters had reported last week that Pantami was lobbying to bring out some last-minute contracts before the May 29 handing over.

The Minister also said that FEC also approved a memo proposing the deployment of an automated system to integrate NINs with individual SIM cards.

The system, he noted, would consolidate the implementation of the NIN-SIM linkage.
