How MKO Abiola’s Son Confronted Those Who Murdered His Parents

Jamiu Abiola, one of the sons of the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, has said that the family will not forgive those who killed their parents until they admit their guilt.

He said that the killers should seek forgiveness from God instead of the family.

MKO Abiola was the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, which was annulled by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

He died in detention on July 7, 1998, after declaring himself as the President and Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria. His wife, Kudirat Abiola, was assassinated on June 4, 1996, in Lagos, for her role in the pro-democracy struggle.

Jamiu Abiola, who is the Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Special Duties, Office of the Vice President, made this statement during an interview with The Punch.

He said that his family does not need to forgive Nigeria because his parents were not killed by the country but by certain individuals.

“Those individuals can go ahead to seek forgiveness from God but they shouldn’t bother seeking forgiveness from our family since they have not admitted any wrongdoing. God will provide justice to the family and the souls of my parents will rest in peace,” he said.

He also revealed that his family has not received any entitlements from the Federal Government since former President Muhammadu Buhari affirmed that MKO Abiola indeed won the June 12, 1993 annulled election.

He expressed optimism that his father will soon be given the entitlements of other presidents and that his running mate, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe, will also be given the entitlements of a vice president.

He said: “I am optimistic that my father will soon be getting the entitlements of other presidents and that his running mate, Amb Babagana Kingibe, will also be given the entitlements of a vice president. It was a joint victory.”

He also appreciated the support of his family’s matriarch, Mrs Adebisi Abiola, Mrs Doyin Abiola and other prominent personalities like President Tinubu, Hon Lola Abiola and Chief Olusegun Osoba. He said that they helped the family to cope with the loss of their parents and to continue their legacy.

MKO Abiola is widely regarded as a hero of democracy in Nigeria and his death sparked nationwide protests and international condemnation. In 2018, President Buhari declared June 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria and conferred MKO Abiola with the highest national honour of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).
