The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has confirmed its ongoing investigation into Air Peace over allegations of exploiting customers through exorbitant ticket pricing.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Ondaje Ijagwu, on Thursday, the FCCPC refuted circulating reports claiming it is not investigating the airline.
“The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) categorically refutes a story entitled ‘FG not investigating Air Peace—FCCPC’ making the rounds on some media platforms, particularly online, which has been falsely attributed to the Commission,” the statement read.
The FCCPC clarified that the story appears to be syndicated and sponsored, urging the public to disregard it as it did not originate from the Commission.
Focus on Consumer Protection
The FCCPC reiterated its December 1, 2024, announcement regarding ongoing enquiries into consumer complaints across banking, telecommunications, and aviation sectors. Air Peace is among the entities under review for alleged exploitative practices, including sharp increases in ticket prices for advance bookings on specific domestic routes.
According to the FCCPC, these investigations are being conducted under the **Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018**. The enquiries aim to address poor service delivery, exploitative practices, and potential violations of consumer rights, while fostering transparency and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
Status of the Investigation
The Commission confirmed that its investigation into Air Peace began as planned on **December 3, 2024**, and is actively reviewing information and responses provided by the airline and other entities involved.
“Appropriate determinations will be made, and necessary actions taken to address any identified violations,” the FCCPC stated, emphasizing its commitment to protecting consumer interests.
The public has been advised to rely solely on verified communications from the FCCPC for accurate information on the matter.
Background
This investigation is part of a broader effort by the FCCPC to address consumer complaints in critical sectors. The Commission had earlier announced the commencement of probes into alleged customer rights violations by Air Peace and other multinational companies operating in Nigeria.
