Ekiti Police Bust Couple, Cleric for Rape
The Ekiti State Police Command has paraded 13 suspects for various crimes, including drug trafficking, armed robbery, rape and conspiracy. The suspects were arrested in different parts of the state and items such as household items, power-generating sets and 40 bags of cannabis sativa were recovered from them.
Among the suspects were a couple, Olomolaye Sesan and his wife Kehinde, who allegedly raped a 17-year-old girl who is a sister to Kehinde and lives with them. The victim, a student of a public secondary school in Ilawe-Ekiti, also hawks goods for the couple.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Sunday Abutu, who paraded the suspects at the command headquarters along Iyin, Ado-Ekiti, said the couple confessed to the crime and would be arraigned in court soon.
Another suspect was a 43-year-old Islamic cleric, Saliu Rasak, who allegedly defiled two teenage girls in Agbado-Ekiti, Gbonyin local government area of the state.
The police said the girls had sought spiritual favour from the cleric and visited his residence for more spiritual power. The cleric gave them a soap and claimed that they would receive favour after bathing with it. He then lured them to his residence and raped them as part of the conditions for the soap to work effectively.
The police also paraded a 23-year-old ex-convict, Omoniyi Ajayi, who allegedly burgled two houses belonging to two different people, along Ilawe Road, Ado-Ekiti.
The items stolen by the suspect include a generator, a three-seater chair, foodstuff, a gas cylinder, a rug, clothes and a cash sum of N25,000.
Furthermore, the police paraded a gang of five armed robbers who invaded Oke-Ako, Itapaji-Ekiti area of Ajoni Local Council Development Areas. The robbers shot sporadically and attempted to kidnap one Kehinde Kazeem from his residence. However, the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) foiled the kidnap and arrested the suspects. The suspects named other members of the gang who are still at large.
Abutu said the command would not relent in its efforts to rid the state of criminals and ensure the safety of lives and property. He urged the public to cooperate with the police by providing useful information that would help in arresting and prosecuting the criminals.
