Ekiti 2022: South zone must produce next Governor – Stakeholders tells political parties

Ahead of the 2022 governorship election in Ekiti State, the stakeholders and prominent politicians from Ekiti South Senatorial District have appealed to the political parties that the next governor must field their candidates from the zone.

The group under the aegis of Ekiti South Agenda Forum said the citizens of the South Senatorial District had not benefitted from the privilege of being elected the state governor for the past 24 years after the creation of Ekiti in 1996. Each of the other two districts of the state has enjoyed the privilege for 12 years respectively.

The stakeholders said that the next Governor must from the district in the interest of justice and equity.

Rising from a meeting at Ikere-Ekiti, the senatorial headquarter, the stakeholders, under the aegis of Ekiti South Agenda Forum, resolved to ensure political parties participating in the 2022 governorship poll field candidates from the zone.

Present at the meeting were: former Deputy Governors Senator Biodun Biodun Olujimi and Prof Kolapo Olusola Eleka as well as ex-banker, Mr Kayode Adaramodu.

The trio was all represented in the meeting.

The stakeholders said it would not leave any stone unturned for the South District to produce governor in 2022, adding it had examined why past agitation failed and what should be done to get things right this time.

In a communique signed by the protem Chairman, Dr. Adekunle Folayan and chairman drafting, former speaker, Tunji Odeyemi, the stakeholders resolved to interface with the Ekiti Governor Kayode Fayemi, the leaderships of the parties, traditional rulers, market women and other critical stakeholders.

They stated: “It is noted with regret that whatever circumstances must have been responsible, the citizens of South Senatorial District had not benefitted from the privilege of being elected the state governor.

“Each of the other two districts of the state has enjoyed the privilege for 12 years respectively. We wish and request that this should be redressed in the next Ekiti Governorship Election in 2022.

“Ekiti South Agenda leadership and people humbly appeal to individuals and/or groups so far misinformed about imagined inadequacies of our district to present winning candidate to discard such unfounded impression, but embrace aspirants from our district as good, reliable, dependable and indeed presentable, anywhere in the world.

“For 24 years, the leaders, stakeholders and members of our great party in Ekiti South Senatorial District have willingly and faithfully cooperated with our compatriots from Ekiti North and Central Senatorial Districts not only to produce party candidates but stake all resources to ensure the victory of the candidates at the previous governorship elections.

“With the cooperation of critical, astute and patriotic counterparts from the other two districts with similar personalities in our district, our great party will surely under the unassailable umbrella of the party put our heads together to choose a credible candidate from among the aspirants from the Ekiti South Senatorial District, that would not only win the 2022 governorship elections but impressively run Ekiti Government of the people’s dream.

“We so assure all and sundries that such aspirants abound in our Ekiti South Senatorial District.”
