DSS Storms Emefiele’s House, Finds 18 “Ghana-Must-Go” Bags of Money and Documents

The Department of State Services (DSS) has raided the residence of Godwin Emefiele, the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Lagos, and seized 18 “Ghana-must-go” bags filled with money and documents.

Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu on June 9 and ordered to be probed for alleged corruption and mismanagement of the apex bank. He was arrested by the DSS on June 10 and taken to Abuja for interrogation.

On June 15, the DSS flew Emefiele back to Lagos and searched his house for several hours. They reportedly carted away 18 bags containing currency and documents from the house. Emefiele was then returned to Abuja with the bags and investigators have since resumed quizzing him about the findings.

The DSS also said it has identified persons and groups planning to stage campaigns of calumny against it and the government over Emefiele’s arrest. It warned that such actions would not be tolerated and urged Nigerians to support the ongoing reforms in the banking sector.

Meanwhile, Emefiele’s lawyers have filed a suit challenging his arrest and detention, claiming that it violates his fundamental rights. They also said that the DSS has denied them access to their client despite a court order granting them permission.

Emefiele’s arrest has sparked reactions from various quarters, with some condemning it as illegal and unconstitutional, while others hailing it as a bold step in the fight against corruption.
