Canada Opens New Immigration Pathway for Carpenters, Plumbers, and Welders from Nigeria
Canada has opened a new immigration pathway for carpenters, plumbers, and welders from Nigeria and other countries. The new pathway is part of Canada’s efforts to attract skilled workers to fill labour shortages in key industries.
The new pathway is called the “Category-Based Selection” (CBS) program. It allows Canada to invite skilled workers with experience in specific occupations to apply for permanent residency. The CBS program is open to a variety of occupations, but the first round of invitations will be targeted at carpenters, plumbers, and welders.
The new pathway is also part of Canada’s Express Entry (EE) system, which is the main system for managing skilled worker applications for Canadian immigration.
The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said in a statement on Tuesday that the new pathway is designed to provide a streamlined and efficient way for individuals with expertise in critical fields to become permanent residents of Canada.
The new pathway will help Canada meet the increasing demand for talent and fill key positions that contribute to the nation’s economic growth and advancement.
The IRCC said that it will conduct category-based selection rounds throughout the year, alongside general invitation rounds, to invite skilled newcomers with experience in the trades. More details will be announced in the coming weeks, it added.
Marc Miller, minister of IRCC, said that it is absolutely critical to address the shortage of skilled trades workers in Canada, and part of the solution is helping the construction sector find and maintain the workers it needs. He said that he looks forward to welcoming more of these talented individuals to Canada.
The new pathway is a result of the changes to EE announced by Sean Fraser, the former minister of IRCC, in May. The changes introduced category-based selection, a new process to welcome skilled newcomers with work experience in priority jobs as permanent residents.
Canada’s EE is an online system that uses a points-based system to rank candidates based on their skills, education, language ability, work experience and other factors. Candidates who meet the requirements of either the Federal Skilled Worker Program or Canadian Experience Class can create an online profile and enter the EE pool. The IRCC then invites the highest-ranking candidates to apply for permanent residence through regular draws.
Canada’s aging population and lower birth rate has been shrinking its labour force, forcing the country to intensify its efforts to attract large, young and vibrant immigrants by offering immigration-friendly policies. Last year, the Canadian federal government announced an aggressive plan to take in 500,000 immigrants a year by 2025, with almost 1.5 million new immigrants coming to the country over the next three years.
The country landed 437,120 Permanent Residents in 2022, a nearly eight percent increase from the total number of PRs in 2021, according to IRCC. For Nigeria, it grew by 41.9 percent to 22,130 last year from 15,595 in the previous year.
To be eligible for the CBS program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Have at least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade occupation
- Have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer
- Meet the language requirements for permanent residency
- Have a clean criminal record
If you meet the requirements for the CBS program, you can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to the Canadian government. EOIs are ranked based on a points system, and the highest-ranked applicants will be invited to apply for permanent residency.
The CBS program is a great opportunity for skilled workers from Nigeria to immigrate to Canada. If you are a carpenter, plumber, or welder with experience, you should consider applying for the CBS program.
