There is jubilation in Washington DC and other parts of the United States after news networks called a victory for Joe Biden, democratic candidate in the US presidential election.

Biden, who will become the 46th President of the United States of America Biden and the oldest ever sworn into the office, secured the needed 270 votes from the Electoral College after Pennsylvania was called for him, though the race was far closer than many Democrats, Republicans and pollsters had expected.

Kamala Harris will become the first female and black person to become Vice President.

In New York, jubilant Americans ran into the streets, screaming and cheering as soon as the news of his election was announced.

In Washington DC, the cars are honking in celebration while many others are currently heading to the White House for celebratory parades.

Biden won by clinching Pennsylvania, a battleground state.

Biden had been neck to neck with incumbent President Donald Trump in what is being considered the tightest race in American history.

Biden entered the race for the Democratic nomination as a frontrunner, having served in the Obama Administration that was most popular with the American people.

Biden had suffered early setbacks in the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary but seized control of the contest with a string of successes on Super Tuesday when 14 states voted on the nomination.

Throughout his campaign, Biden preferred socially distant events as part of his efforts to stop the spread of the Coronavirus, which was the focal point of his race.

He criticized Trump for hosting packed rallies which he described as “Super Spreader” events which violated every Coronavirus safety guideline.

Biden’s core messaging focused on the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, equality, race relations, climate change and taxing the rich.

Biden, 77, won the keen-fought election by scoring 273 Electoral College votes against incumbent President Donald Trump’s 214.

An hour earlier, Mr Trump had tweeted “I WON THIS ELECTION, BY A LOT!”

Kamala Harris, Mr Biden’s running mate, made history as the first woman to be elected U.S. vice president.

The result of the election was announced Saturday after several tense days of vote-counting in many battlegrounds. Before the Election Day on Tuesday, about 100 million votes had been cast.

Mr Biden got the victory in his third attempt at the presidency.

In a tweet after the result was announced, Mr Biden wrote: “America, I’m honored that you have chosen me to lead our great country.

The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a President for all Americans — whether you voted for me or not.

I will keep the faith that you have placed in me.”

Mrs Harris, a senator, tweeted: “This election is about so much more than @JoeBiden or me. It’s about the soul of America and our willingness to fight for it. We have a lot of work ahead of us. Let’s get started.”
