Three communities in Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto State were attacked by suspected bandits on Saturday night, leaving 37 residents dead and several others injured.
According to a community leader, Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf, the affected communities were; Raka, Raka Dutse and Filin Gawa.
He said the bandits were angry because the villagers refused to pay the levy imposed on them by the bandits.
The former chairman of the local government, Alhaji Bashar Kalenjeni, also confirmed the attack, saying 18 persons were killed at Raka, 17 at Filin Gawa and two at Raka Dutse.
He said the villagers could not bury the deceased in the night because the bandits came back and dispersed them. He said some villagers were still missing and they were waiting for security operatives to lead them to the villages to bury the dead ones.
The spokesman of the Sokoto State Police Command, ASP Ahmad Rufa’i, did not respond to calls.
