The 9th edition of the African Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) was a night of glamour and celebration for the film industry across Africa. The event, which took place on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at the Eko Hotel in Lagos, honoured the talents and achievements of actors, directors, producers and other professionals in the film world.
The veteran actress Patience Ozokwor received the Industry Merit Award for her remarkable service and contribution to the industry. She was presented with the award by her colleagues and friends, who paid glowing tributes to her.
The big winners of the night were Jade Osiberu’s Brotherhood and Kunle Afolayan’s Anikulapo, which grabbed multiple awards in different categories. Brotherhood won six awards, including Best Actor in a Drama for Tobi Bakre, Best Cinematographer for Loukman Ali and Best Movie West Africa. Anikulapo won five awards, including Best Director for Kunle Afolayan, Best Soundtrack for Kent Edunjobi and Best Overall Movie Africa.
Other notable winners include Funke Akindele and Broda Shaggi for Best Actress and Actor in a Comedy respectively, Osas Ighodaro for Best Actress in a Drama and Odunlade Adekola for Best Supporting Actor.
The event also featured stunning performances by top Nigerian artists such as Tiwa Savage, Davido, Burna Boy and Wizkid. The hosts of the night were IK Osakioduwa and Nancy Isime, who kept the audience entertained with their witty banter and dazzling outfits.
Meanwhile, Big Brother Naija star Tacha Akide caused a stir on social media with her outfit at the AMVCA.
She revealed that her blue dress, designed by celebrity designer Tolu Bally, cost her a whopping $20,000. She also shared a receipt to prove her claim.
