Labour Calls Off Nationwide Strike After NSA’s Intervention

The Nigerian workers have called off the nationwide strike that began on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, over the assault of NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero by security operatives in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

The strike was aimed at protesting the violation of the workers’ rights and dignity by the state government.

The decision to end the strike was taken at an urgent virtual joint National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the two major labour unions, NLC and TUC.

The meeting was convened after the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, appealed to the workers to suspend the action and allow for a peaceful resolution of the crisis.

According to a source at the joint NEC, the workers agreed to give Malam Ribadu the benefit of the doubt as he promised to address the issues and ensure justice for the injured labour leader.

The source also said that the NSA assured the workers that the federal government would intervene in the matter and hold the Imo State government accountable for its actions.

The workers, however, warned that they would resume the strike if the government failed to honour its commitments and respect the workers’ rights.

They also demanded an apology from the Imo State governor, Hope Odidika Uzodinma, and the immediate release of all the workers who were arrested during the strike.
