Zamfara Governor Suspends Traditional Rulers Over Banditry

Zamfara State Governor, Bello Mutawalle, has suspended the Emir of Maru, Abubakar Ibrahim, and the district head of Kanoma town, Ahmed Lawal, for alleged involvement in armed banditry activities.

A statement by the governor’s spokesman, Yusuf Idris, said that their suspension was activated following series of petitions against them by their subjects.

The statement said that the affected traditional rulers have been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of their domains.

It also said they are to proceed on leave pending investigation into their alleged involvement in armed banditry activities.

Several people were killed in Langido village in 2011 when banditry began in Maru local government where the two suspended traditional rulers come from.

Immediate past governor, Abdulaziz Yari, had suspended six district heads suspected to be part of the menace.
