Why We Are Demanding N400,000 As New Minimum Wage – Labour Union

In a bold move, the Labour Union is pushing for a transformative shift in the national minimum wage, proposing a substantial increase to $300 (N436,500) for Nigerian workers. The proposal, presented by Comrade Benjamin Anthony, Chairman of the Trade Union Side at the Joint Meeting of the National Public Service Negotiating Council, addresses the pressing issue of the current minimum wage of N30,000 becoming unsustainable in the face of the soaring cost of living.

Expressing concern over the diminishing value of the naira, Anthony emphasized the urgent need for a wage hike to align with economic realities. The proposal comes as a response to the challenges faced by Nigerian workers in sustaining their livelihoods with the current wage structure.

Represented by the Union’s Secretary, Comrade Boma Mohammed, Anthony also condemned the recent delays in salary payments by the Federal Government, calling for an end to this unsettling trend.

“In light of the above, Labour has proposed a Living Wage of $300 (N436,500) for Nigerian Workers. This is due to the fall in the value of our currency; today, if you carry N100,000 to the market, you will come back with a leather bag of items. We call on the Government to immediately pay the arrears of the N35,000 wage award along with the current and expedited action on the process of getting a new living wage to bring succour to the working class people,” remarked Anthony.

As negotiations unfold, the Labour Union’s proposal reflects a crucial step towards addressing the economic challenges faced by Nigerian workers, acknowledging the necessity for a wage structure that ensures a dignified standard of living. Stay tuned for updates on this pivotal development in the ongoing discussions surrounding the national minimum wage.
