WAEC exposes 56 rogue websites leaking exam questions
The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has revealed that it has identified 56 rogue websites that leaked its West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) questions to candidates and their accomplices.
The head of the national office in Nigeria, Patrick Areghan, made this disclosure on Thursday in Abuja while monitoring the examination in some government secondary schools.
Mr Areghan said the rogue website operators would be prosecuted, and blamed some dishonest supervisors for being responsible for malpractices during examinations.
He explained that the supervisors were supposed to collect the question papers one hour before the commencement of the examination and deliver them to the examination centers.
However, some of them would snap the question papers and send them to their syndicate groups who would post them on the rogue websites.
He added that some of the websites would alter the date of the question papers and deceive gullible parents and candidates that they had access to WAEC’s questions.
Mr Areghan said WAEC had deployed technology to detect malpractices from any location and had made several arrests across the country.
He said no fewer than 15 persons comprising candidates, supervisors, school proprietors, and others connected with the malpractices had been arrested so far.
He warned candidates and their parents to desist from patronizing the rogue websites and engaging in any form of malpractice, as they would face the full wrath of the law if caught.
WASSCE is a type of standardized test administered by WAEC to students who have completed secondary education. It is a requirement for admission into tertiary institutions in West Africa. The examination covers both school and private candidates.
