US Court Judgment Indicting, Tinubu’s $460,000 forfeited for Drug Offences Admitted in Election Petition

The Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja has accepted as evidence a judgment from a US District Court that reportedly found Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu guilty of drug related offences and ordered him to forfeit $460,000.

The judgment was presented by Barrister Lawrence Uchechukwu Nnana Nwakaeti, a witness for the Labour Party (LP) and its presidential candidate, Mr Peter Gregory Obi, who are challenging the victory of Tinubu in the February 25, 2023, presidential election.

The witness, who was led by Mr Jibrin Okutepa SAN, said he had read the judgment in the US and that it spoke for itself. He said he was surprised if there was no mention of the $460,000 forfeiture.

However, Tinubu and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), said they had objections to the admission of the judgment but would raise them at the final address stage.

The witness was cross examined by Chief Wole Olanipekun SAN and Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN, who represented Tinubu and APC respectively. They asked him about the registration of the judgment in Nigeria, the certificate from any Consular in Nigeria or America, the charges against Tinubu and the Formal Clearance Report by Legal Attachee from American Embassy.

The witness admitted that he did not have any of these documents but insisted that the judgment was from a civil proceeding and not a criminal one.

The hearing of the petition was adjourned till May 31 by Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani, who presided over the court.
