Eight persons have been confirmed dead in the gas explosion that rocked Ipaja area of Lagos early Thursday morning.
The explosion started from a gas station belonging to Best Roof Cooking Gas in Baruwa axis of Lagos State.
Eight deaths were recorded while many others sustained varying degrees of injury from the incident, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
According to a statement by the Director-General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the incident occurred around 6:00 am, destroying several properties.
While further assessment of the area is still ongoing, a tweet by the emergency response agency, disclosed that an initial disaster assessment revealed that eight fatalities have been identified.
Some of the buildings affected include a storey building housing, 25 houses (mostly bungalows), one primary school, one hotel, one creative center and 16 lock-up shops.
Also razed are one gas truck, pickup van and tricycle.
A combined effort of LASEMA, LRU Fire, LASG Fire Service, NPF, NUPENG, and LNSC are on the ground to curtail the spread of the fire to other buildings.
An official of the Nigerian Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), who spoke to newsmen at the scene, said a generator triggered the fire.
