UI Lecturer Shot Dead by Gunmen, Car Stolen
A lecturer of the University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. Opeyemi Ajewole, has been shot dead by gunmen who also stole his car, The Nation reports.
The incident happened on Monday night around 9 pm, as the lecturer was returning home from his office at Moniya along Ojoo-Oyo expressway.
The gunmen reportedly ambushed him on the road and shot him several times before making away with his vehicle and personal belongings.
The lecturer died on the spot and his body was deposited at UI Anatomy.
Ajewole was a professor of Social and Environmental Forestry at the UI Department of Forest Resources Management.
A friend of the deceased, Olukayode Ogunsanwo, confirmed the incident to The Nation, but said he was not sure if it was a case of armed robbery or assassination.
He said: “Yes. It is true. It is true. But we are not sure if it is armed robbers or hired assassins.”
The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, SP Adewale Osifeso, also confirmed the incident and said it was under investigation.
He said: “The matter is under investigation. Updates would be provided accordingly, please.”
