Trump Pledges to End Birthright Citizenship and Support Pardons for Capitol Riot Convicts
President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to eliminate birthright citizenship, a constitutional provision under the 14th Amendment that grants U.S. citizenship to anyone born on American soil.
In his first televised interview since winning the November election, Trump spoke with NBC, where he reiterated his commitment to deporting undocumented immigrants, including those with family ties to U.S. citizens.
“We’re going to have to get it changed. We’ll maybe have to go back to the people, but we have to end it,” Trump stated, underscoring his determination to push for a significant shift in immigration policy.
Support for Dreamers and Legislative Collaboration
While emphasizing strict immigration measures, Trump also expressed willingness to collaborate with Democrats on policies benefiting “Dreamers”—undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. This dual approach suggests an attempt to balance his immigration reforms with humanitarian considerations.
Pardons for Capitol Riot Convicts
Trump announced plans to issue pardons for individuals convicted in connection with the January 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riot. He described the conditions faced by incarcerated individuals as “filthy” and “disgusting,” pledging swift action upon taking office.
“These people are living in hell,” he said. “I’ll be acting very quickly, first day.”
The president-elect’s statements highlight his intent to prioritize controversial and transformative actions early in his administration, setting the stage for a potentially polarizing tenure.
