Tinubu’s New NIPC Boss Faces Fraud Allegations Over N3 Billion Lagos Funds

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Aisha Rimi as the new CEO of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), despite her involvement in a fraud case over the alleged diversion of N3 billion from the Lagos state government.

Ms Rimi, who is the wife of Folorunsho Coker, the former managing director of the Lagos state Number Plate Production Authority, was indicted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2018 for using her law firm and another company to siphon funds from the state agency.

The EFCC had traced suspicious transfers of over N3 billion from the Number Plate Authority into the accounts of Rimi and Partners and Ekosina Investment Limited, both of which Ms Rimi was the sole proprietor and signatory. A federal high court judge had ordered the freezing of 10 bank accounts belonging to Ms Rimi and her companies following the EFCC’s investigation.

The EFCC had said that Ms Rimi was the major partner in the fraud scheme and that her husband had used his influence to facilitate the diversion of the state funds. It is not clear whether the EFCC has concluded its investigation or whether Mr Tinubu was aware of the fraud allegations against Ms Rimi before he appointed her as the head of the NIPC, a federal agency responsible for promoting and facilitating investments in Nigeria.

The EFCC and the presidency have not responded to requests for comment on the matter. This is not the first time that Mr Tinubu has appointed people with corruption records to key positions in his government. His chief of staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, had his law licence revoked by the State Bar of Georgia in the United States for ethical violations and dishonesty.
