Tinubu, Shettima To Spend N10bn On Trips, Meals As Villa’s Animals Get N201m

The 2024 budget proposal of N27.5 trillion, which is currently under scrutiny by the National Assembly, reveals the extravagant spending plans of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The budget has a revenue projection of N18.32 trillion and a deficit of N9.18 trillion (3.88 per cent of GDP). It also proposes capital expenditure of N8.7 trillion and recurrent expenditure of N18.51 trillion.

According to the budget details, Tinubu and Shettima will spend a whopping N10.13 billion on travels and meals alone.

Tinubu’s local and foreign trips will cost N638.5 million and N6.9 billion respectively, while Shettima’s local and international journeys will amount to N618.4 million and N1.2 billion respectively. The total travel expenses of the duo will be N7.6 billion.

In addition, Tinubu and Shettima will allocate N660.5 million for refreshments, meals, and foodstuff for their offices. Tinubu’s office will get N287.8 million, while Shettima’s office will receive N372.6 million.

Out of this amount, Tinubu will spend N33.6 million on refreshments and meals and N254.2 million on foodstuff and catering materials.

Shettima will spend N35 million on refreshments and meals and N337.5 million on foodstuff and catering materials.

The budget proposal also shows that the feeding of the animals at the Aso Rock’s zoo, tagged “wildlife conservation”, will consume N201.4 million.

Moreover, the renovation of the president and vice president’s quarters at the State House will take N800 million: N500 million for Tinubu and N300 million for Shettima.

This is in addition to the N13.5 billion that was approved in the 2023 supplementary budget for the renovation of their official residences in Lagos and Abuja.

The breakdown of the supplementary budget showed that N4 billion was for the renovation of Tinubu’s residential quarters, N2.5 billion for the renovation of Aguda House, N4 billion for the renovation of Dodan Barracks, and N3 billion for the renovation of Shettima’s quarters in Lagos.

Other expenses in the 2024 budget proposal include honorarium and sitting allowance for Tinubu and Shettima, which were pegged at N152.3 million and N67.3 million respectively. Powering of generators in the State House will cost N37.9 million, while electricity charges will amount to N260.8 million.

The 2024 budget proposal of Tinubu and Shettima reflects their lavish lifestyle and disregard for the economic realities of the country. The budget is likely to face criticism and opposition from the public and the lawmakers, who may demand accountability and transparency from the executive.
