Tinubu meets with PDP G-5 ahead of National Assembly leadership election
President Bola Tinubu is holding a closed-door meeting with a group of governors who worked against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections and supported the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The group, known as the G-5, consists of four former governors and the current governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde. They include Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State.
The meeting is taking place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the group arrived at about 4:21 pm on Thursday afternoon.
The G-5 governors were instrumental in Tinubu’s victory in the February 2023 presidential election, as they worked against their party’s candidate, Atiku Abubakar. Some of them supported Tinubu directly, while some others backed the Labour Party’s candidate, Peter Obi.
The meeting is believed to be part of Tinubu’s strategy to strengthen his alliance with the G-5 governors and woo them into supporting his preferred candidates for the leadership positions of the 10th National Assembly, which is expected to be inaugurated next week.
Tinubu is reportedly backing Senator Godswill Akpabio for the Senate President and Hon. Tajudeen Abbas for the Speaker of the House of Representatives. However, it is speculated that some of the G-5 governors may have different preferences or interests in the National Assembly leadership.
Sources close to Tinubu have dismissed such rumours as baseless and unfounded. They said that Tinubu has a cordial relationship with the G-5 governors and that he appreciates their contributions to his administration and the APC.
They also said that Tinubu is committed to fulfilling his campaign promises and delivering good governance to Nigerians. They said that Tinubu is open to dialogue and consultation with all stakeholders in the APC and beyond.
