Tinubu-Kwankwaso Meeting Angers Kano APC, Leaked Audio Exposes Ganduje
Tinubu’s Secret Meeting with Kwankwaso Sparks Outrage in APC
The president-elect of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, has stirred up controversy among his allies in the All Progressives Congress (APC) after holding a private meeting with Rabiu Kwankwaso, the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), in France.
According to Newsflash Nigeria, the meeting lasted for four hours and covered topics such as Kwankwaso’s possible inclusion in the incoming cabinet.
However, this did not sit well with some APC leaders in Kano, who accused Tinubu of betraying them and rewarding their political rival.
Abdulmajid Kwamanda, the APC leader in Kano, issued a statement warning Tinubu not to appoint Kwankwaso to any position in his administration, even as a messenger.
He threatened to disrupt the APC in the north and withdraw his support for Tinubu if he ignored their outcry.
Adding fuel to the fire, an alleged leaked phone call recording between Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and Ibrahim Masari, a former vice presidential candidate of the APC, was published by Daily Trust.
In the recording, Ganduje expressed his displeasure at Tinubu’s meeting with Kwankwaso and claimed that he was being treated unfairly by the president-elect.
He lamented, “Now he (Tinubu) is seeing Kwankwaso as an alternative to us?”
Masari, who is a close ally of Tinubu, tried to calm down Ganduje and asked him to wait until he met with Tinubu. He also advised him to remain calm and not to react impulsively.
Ganduje left Kano for Abuja on Friday night and is expected to meet with Masari over the weekend before meeting with Tinubu.
Ganduje has not yet commented on the authenticity of the audio conversation.
Bola Tinubu, 71, is a former governor of Lagos State and a senator for Lagos West. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential politicians in Nigeria and a key figure in the formation of the APC in 2013.
He won the presidential election on February 25, 2023, defeating former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and other candidates.
He is scheduled to be sworn in as Nigeria’s next president on May 29, 2023.
