Tinubu Approves N3bn For Social Register Verification Amid Humanitarian Ministry Probe

President Bola Tinubu’s approval of N3 billion for verifying the National Social Register has ignited controversy, raising questions about its origin and purpose.

The social register, established under former President Buhari, facilitated cash transfers and social initiatives. However, the source of this new funding throws shadows, as a leaked memo reveals it came from the COVID-19 palliative fund.

Adding fuel to the fire, this news arrives amidst heightened scrutiny of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The recently suspended minister, Betta Edu, faces investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged N585 million fraud.

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga urged caution and patience, requesting Nigerians to avoid media trials and let the EFCC diligently conduct its investigation. He assured that the President has directed a thorough probe into the ministry’s activities and that appropriate action will be taken based on the EFCC’s findings.
