Youths believed to be supporters of Governor Muhammadu Jibrilla yesterday attacked some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) pushing for direct primaries in Adamawa State.
The youths chanting “Sai Bindow” reportedly attacked the Yola office of the former Secretary to the Government, Babachir David Lawal, during a meeting of Dimas Ezra faction, causing injury to one person and destroying several cars.
The spokesman of the group, Usman Ibrahim, said the group was attacked when its members were perfecting their position in favour of direct primaries as against indirect primaries.
Ibrahim said the police sent an inspection team after they were notified of the attack.
A stakeholder, Ibrahim Waziri, said the person who conveyed the thugs had been identified, adding that he believed the hoodlums were working for the governor. He further stated that if the governor thinks he is popular, he should test that notion in direct primaries.
But reacting, the Special Assistant to the governor, Dickson Martins, dismissed the allegation as baseless, saying it was aimed at smearing the governor’s reputation.
“It can’t be true. How can a governor send thugs to attack people. The governor is a responsible person, so it is irresponsible to make such allegations against him”, he said.
The Dimas Ezra faction believed to enjoy the support of APC bigwigs, including former governor Murtala Nyako, Babachir Lawal and former anti-graft chief, Nuhu Ribadu, had earlier filed a case in court challenging the congresses.
