Fayemi: Full list of over 1000 sacked Ekiti Varsity workers

The management of the Ekiti State University (EKSU) on Tuesday, December 10, has finally released the names of workers affected by the decision of the school Governing Council

Ekiti State University Governing Council had last week, amidst uproar, considered and adopted the report of the staff audit, carried out by a firm of external auditors commissioned to undertake a general auditing of staff in the university which recommended the disengagement of workers employed by the previous administration.

Most affected are those employed between 2016 and 2018, whose employment had been confirmed and enjoined necessary promotion.

Meanwhile, Newsflash247 had earlier reported that more than 600 workers at the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, on Monday protested their last week’s sacking by the institution’s Governing Council.

The sacked workers were relieved of their duties over alleged irregular appointments, discrepancies in certificates, failure to possess requisite certificates from the primary level and falsification of age, among other offences.

The protesting workers, acting under the aegis of the Joint Action Committee, comprising the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, the Non-Academic Staff Unions of Educational and Allied Institutions, and the National Association of Academic Technologists, were said to have disrupted activities in the university.

The Chairman, SSANU, EKSU Chapter, Kolawole Olatunde, who addressed the workers, described the sacking of the workers as inhuman.

Olatunde is also the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress in the state.

The protesting workers and the leaders of the other labour unions, who said the basis of the sack was flimsy, promised to sustain the action till Tuesday and beyond until the management rescinded its decision on the sacked workers.

In his reaction, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Edward Olanipekun, advised the leaders of the labour unions to maintain a reasonable level of decorum when presenting their agitations.

Olanipekun said, “The university management will not watch and allow the unions to take laws into their hands by preventing those with legitimate business on campus from going about their business.

“There is a laid-down procedure to be followed under the labour law, in particular if staff unions want to withdraw their services. This has not been followed in this case by JAC”.

The vice-chancellor, who also frowned at the situation where law-abiding staff were being chased out of their offices, described the attitude of the protesting workers as unethical.

He appealed to the staff and students of the university to go about their normal duties, while warning that the leadership of the JAC would be held responsible in the event of any breakdown of law and order in the university.
