Fuel Subsidy Removal: FG, TUC Meet Again to Resolve Crisis

The federal government and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have resumed their meeting to discuss the implications of the removal of fuel subsidy.

The meeting, which is taking place at Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, started around 5pm on Friday.

The meeting is a continuation of the inconclusive dialogue that the government had with the organised labour, including the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the TUC, on Wednesday.

The government’s team is led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume. Other members of the team are the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele; former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; and the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari.

Also in attendance are the Executive Secretary of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), Zacch Adedeji; Executive Vice President, Downstream, of the NNPCL, Yemi Adetunji; former Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Dele Alake; and Hon James Faleke, among others.

The TUC is represented by seven members, led by their President, Mr Festus Osifo.

Alake had said after last week meeting that talks on solutions to all issues at hand would continue.

The removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu’s government has sparked protests and criticisms from labour unions and other stakeholders who have accused the government of insensitivity and lack of consultation.
