Exclusive: Trump in Handcuffs over Mar-a-Lago Secrets

The former president faces 37 federal charges for sharing national security secrets at his Florida resort

Former US President Donald Trump made history on Tuesday as the first ex-president to be arrested and arraigned on federal charges.

Trump was taken into custody by US Marshals at the federal courthouse in Miami, where he faced 37 counts of mishandling classified documents and obstructing justice.

The charges stem from an investigation by special counsel Jack Smith, who accused Trump of keeping and sharing sensitive national security information at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida after he left office.

Smith also alleged that Trump conspired with his aide Walt Nauta, who was also arrested and charged, to cover up their actions and interfere with the probe.

Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges and was released on bail. He denounced the case as a “witch hunt” and a “sad day for the country”. He also vowed to continue his bid for the 2024 presidential election despite the legal troubles.

Trump’s arrest sparked reactions from both supporters and critics. Some Republicans expressed doubts about the validity of the charges and accused the Biden administration of political persecution.

Some Democrats praised the indictment as a sign of accountability and justice. Some legal experts said the case could pose unprecedented challenges for the US judicial system and the rule of law.

Trump is expected to appear in court again for a preliminary hearing in July. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
