SUG President, four other students die in auto crash

Five students of the Sa’Adatu Rimi College of Education, Kano including the Union President of the institution died in an auto crash while 13 were seriously injured.

The incident occurred on Thursday along with Kano-Katsina road in the Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State.

Newsflash Nigeria gathered that the SUG president, Abubakar Suleiman, three cabinet members and another student were travelling for a zonal students meeting when the accident happened.

In a condole messages released by both the Kano State governor, Umar Ganduje and the National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Asefon Sunday Dayo, commiserated with the families of the five students.

Ganduje said in his condolence message, “We were shocked over the death of our children, the 5 students who died in an auto crash on their way to Katsina State for zonal students’ meeting. The information was sad and tormenting.”

“We learnt that they died around Bichi Local Government Area. They are Abubakar Sulaiman, Tahir A. Dalhatu, Maryam Abdullahi, A’isha Wada Abdulsalam and Usman Abubakar Abubakar. While the first four came from Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, the last person came from Federal College of Education, Kano,” he stated.

He prayed for Allah’s blessing and forgiveness to the reposed souls and prayed for the quick recovery of the other 13 students who were admitted to the hospital.

What happened, according to the governor, “is a tragedy for the state and the nation in general. They were young, dedicated and responsible youth who chose to pursue education in order to move the society forward.”

He emphasized that “They left us when we needed them. But our Creator, their Creator, Almighty Allah needed them the most. May He forgive all their shortcomings and reward their good deeds.

“I am, therefore, on behalf of the government and people of Kano state, condoling members of their families, their friends, Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education, Kumbotso, Federal College of Education, Kano, students leaders and all other students over this tragedy.

Also, the National NANS President, Asefon Sunday Dayo, in his condolence message “I have regrettably received the preliminary report of the fatal auto crash along Kano-Katsina road that claimed the lives of four of our comrades, the students of Sa’Adatu Rimi College of Education. Unfortunately, the Students Union President of the College also died in the auto crash. This is indeed a dark Thursday for NANS and students activism in Nigeria

Mr Asofon said is imperative that the government at all levels must ensure that the roads are in good conditions and necessary precautions are installed on the roads to forestall future occurrences.

He sent heartfelt condolences to the families of the departed student leaders, the Sa’Adatu Rimi College of Education and the government and the people of Kano State for this monumental loss.

“THE SUDDEN DEPARTURE OF FOUR STUDENTS LEADERS ALONG KANO-KATSINA ROAD: NANS CONDOLE WITH FAMILIES, NANS ZONE A, SA’ADATU RIMI COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND GOVERNMENT OF KANO STATE.

Unfortunately, the Students Union President of the College also died in the auto crash. This is indeed a dark Thursday for NANS and students activism in Nigeria.

“I and the entire leadership of NANS, therefore, send our heartfelt condolences to the families of the departed student leaders, the Sa’Adatu Rimi College of Education and the government and the people of Kano State for this monumental loss.

“It is therefore imperative that government at all levels must ensure that our roads are in good conditions and necessary precautions are installed on the roads to forestall future occurrences.

“I am by this release declaring that special prayers should be offered for the repose of the departed in all NANS events nationally for the next one week. I will also lead a delegation of the National Leadership to Kano State to condole with the families, College and Government of Kano State.

“While awaiting the comprehensive report on the incident, I, therefore, call on all our comrades across the nation to continue to pray for the repose of the departed and draw inspiration from their sacrifice to ensure that students’ rights are protected always.

“This is a sad day for all of us and we pray that God grant their families the fortitude to bear this monumental loss”.
