Strange deaths continue in Kano as Actor, journalist, others die

Strange deaths continue in Kano State as the former director of Bayero University Health Services, Nasidi Nuhu, a journalist, Yusuf Wakili Yola and Kannywood actor, Ubale Ibrahim are among the latest persons to have died in Kano in the last 24 hours.

On Thursday, April 30, Aliyu Daneji, father of Sani Aliyu, national coordinator of the presidential task force; Khadijah Abdallah, wife of Kabiru Bayero, a former ambassador; and Tijjani Yarwa, a businessman based at Kwanar Jaba in Nassarawa local government area of Kano joined the list of those who have passed away, the Cable reports.

Since Kano recorded its index COVID-19 case in April, it has been hit by a wave of “strange deaths” which is causing panic in the northern state.

Hundreds of people died within one week in the state, with some suspecting it could be related to COVID-19.

However, the government dismissed such suspicion, attributing the deaths to diabetes, malaria and hypertension.

The Kano state government decided to adopt verbal autopsy to ascertain the cause of the unexplained deaths.

According to the government, autopsy is frowned at by the “religion and culture of our people”.

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered a two-week lockdown and a probe of the deaths.

The Kano governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, is begging for the 14-day total lockdown imposed on the state by the federal government to be eased.

Kano is in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic, with 92 new cases recorded in the state on Friday, May 1 alone, making it the state with the second highest number in the country. Lagos is first with over a thousand cases.
