Sheffield UK Court Jails Nigerian Man for 12 Years for Raping Woman on Her Way Home
A Sheffield man who raped a woman he followed in the early hours of the morning has been sentenced to 12 years and three months in prison.
A Nigerian Man, Abiola Tijani, 30, of Cherry Street, attacked the victim as she was walking home on 29 July, forcing her against some railings and s*xually assaulting her.
Sheffield Crown Court heard that Tijani admitted the rape charge and showed no remorse for his actions.
The judge, Rachael Harrison, described the attack as “every woman’s worst nightmare” and said that no sentence could undo the harm Tijani caused or be considered adequate.
She also imposed a lifetime restraining order on Tijani, banning him from contacting the victim or going near her home or workplace.
The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was praised by the police for her courage and strength in reporting the crime and supporting the prosecution.
PC Sarah Frith, from South Yorkshire Police, said that the victim had shown “great bravery” and “the strength of character she has shown” in the face of such a traumatic ordeal. She also urged anyone who has been a victim of sexual violence to come forward and seek help.
