Senate to Screen EFCC Chairman Nominee, Ola Olukoyede

The Senate has received a letter from President Tinubu, requesting the screening and confirmation of Ola Olukoyede as the new chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Olukoyede, who is the former secretary of the commission, was appointed by Tinubu as the substantive chairman of EFCC, following the resignation of Abdulrasheed Bawa. Bawa had stepped down from his position after being suspended over allegations of corruption.

President Tinubu’s letter was read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during Tuesday’s plenary session.

The letter stated that Olukoyede’s appointment was in accordance with Section 2(3) of the EFCC Act, 2022, which stipulates that the chairman of the commission shall be appointed by the president subject to the confirmation of the Senate. The letter also indicated that Olukoyede will serve for a term of four years, renewable once.

In addition, President Tinubu also nominated Mohammed Hassan as the new secretary of EFCC. Hassan is a lawyer and a former director of legal services at the Federal Ministry of Justice. He is expected to assist Olukoyede in overseeing the operations and administration of the commission.

The Senate is expected to refer the nominations to its Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes for further screening and report back to the plenary within two weeks.
