In a crucial move to address Nigeria’s economic challenges, the Senate is currently in talks with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic team. This meeting follows the Red Chamber’s invitation of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Olayemi Cardoso last week, with the entire economic team requested to appear this Friday.
Key members of the economic team present at the meeting include Minister of Finance, Olawale Edun; Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso; Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zacch Adedeji; and Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, among others.
Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banks, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, highlighted that the previously scheduled meeting with CBN Governor Cardoso was deferred due to his engagement at the House of Representatives.
In light of national security concerns leading to a session with the Service Chiefs, Senator Abiru emphasized the need for a thorough and extended interaction with the economic team. This decision aims to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the economic issues at hand, with the invitation extending beyond the governor to include the broader economic team.
Stay tuned for updates as the Senate navigates discussions with President Tinubu’s economic experts to devise strategies for tackling the economic downturn, hunger, and currency depreciation facing Nigeria.
