Senate Confirms Olukoyede as EFCC Chairman, Hammajoda as Secretary
The upper chamber of the National Assembly has given its nod to the appointment of Ola Olukoyede as the new Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the country’s foremost anti-corruption agency. Alongside Olukoyede, the Senate also confirmed Muhammad Hammajoda as the Secretary of the EFCC.
The confirmation came after a thorough screening of both nominees by the Senate on Wednesday afternoon.
They had earlier appeared before the lawmakers with some members of the EFCC management team, following their nomination by President Bola Tinubu last week. Their appointment is for an initial term of four years, which can be renewed.
Olukoyede, who is a seasoned lawyer and former Secretary of the agency, takes over from Abdulrasheed Bawa, who was suspended by Tinubu in June over allegations of corruption and insubordination. Bawa had served as the EFCC chairman for less than two years.
Olukoyede and Hammajoda are expected to lead the EFCC in its mandate of fighting economic and financial crimes, as well as recovering stolen assets from corrupt individuals and entities.
They are also expected to work with other relevant agencies and stakeholders to enhance the anti-corruption drive of the Tinubu administration.
