School resumption: Ekiti govt releases third term timetable, new 2020/2021 academic plans
The governor said students in SSS II, JSS III and Primary 6 are to resume on September 21, 2020 while students in SSS I, JSS II and Primary 5 and 4 are to resume from September 28, 2020; students in JSS I and Primary 1-3 are to resume on October 19, 2020.
Ahead of the resumption of activities in both public and private schools, Ekiti State Government on Monday announced new academic structure adopted in the state after the lockdown of schools accessioned by the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.
Newsflash247 had earlier reported that the State governor, Kayode Fayemi, on Sunday had announced September 21 as the reopening date of schools in the state.
Fayemi made the announcement when he was addressing the people of the state in a state wide broadcast on Sunday evening.
The governor said students in SSS II, JSS III and Primary 6 are to resume on September 21, 2020 while students in SSS I, JSS II and Primary 5 and 4 are to resume from September 28, 2020; students in JSS I and Primary 1-3 are to resume on October 19, 2020.
The governor further explained that, pupils in Kindergarten and Nursery Schools are expected to resume on November 2, 2020 when we hope more assurances of safety for their age bracket would have been established.
Fayemi said the tertiary institutions of learning in Ekiti may begin to reopen as from October 2, 2020.
On Monday, the Commissioner for Education in the state has announced the new academic structure adopted in the state, saying the third term academic session will hold for five weeks.
In a statement through, the Director of Schools in the Ministry of Education, E. A. Daramola however, congratulated Senior Secondary, SS 3 students who successfully completed their West Africa School Senior Certificate Examinations, WASSCEs and urged them to stay safe even as they await their results.
According to the Director, the plans for reopening for third term of 2019/2020 session and a new 2020/2021 academic session in public schools are:
“The ministry is adopting a phased approach to opening public schools. This phased approach to opening will enable public schools meet COVID-19 social distance rules and safety protocols and will help us watch the behaviour of the pandemic as we gradually open up our schools.
“The present Junior Secondary School, JSS 3 and SS 2 students in public schools in the state are to resume classes from Monday, 21st of September, 2020.
“The approved state school calendar for third term 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic sessions as stated below:
- The third term scheduled between Monday, September 21, 2020 and Friday, October 23, 2020 for the period of five weeks.
- The school calendar for 2020/2021 academic session first term scheduled between Monday, October 26, 2020 and Friday, December 18, 2020 for the period of eight weeks.
“Schools must also comply with safety protocols and hygiene guidelines as instructed by the State Government.
“The State Government wishes to remind schools that the pandemic is still with us and we must in all situations, make the safety of our children, teachers and parents and our community as a whole our first priority,“ Daramola pleaded.
