Students of the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, have staged a protest after hoodlums suspected to be armed robbers invaded the female hostels on Thursday morning.
Newsflash Nigeria learnt that the assailants stormed hostel ‘D’ and ‘C’ near the school back gate, where many of the female students reside, around 1:45 a.m. today.
They were armed with guns and machetes and robbed the students of their mobile phones, cash and other valuables.
Some of the students who witnessed the attack told The PUNCH that four female students were injured during the raid and some girls were s-xually assaulted by the hoodlums.
They also lamented the poor security situation in the school and demanded urgent action from the authorities.
The protest by the students caused tension and chaos in the school premises, forcing the management to shut down the two entrances of the school to prevent further escalation.
The spokesperson of the State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident to newsmen but denied that any student was raped.
She said that the police had mobilized to the scene and met with the school’s chief security officer to restore normalcy. She also said that an investigation was ongoing to apprehend the culprits.
“It is not true. They only stole their phones,” she said, referring to the reports of rape.
