Governor of Rivers State, NyesomWike has updated the process of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to determine the Rivers governorship election.
INEC had declared the election in the state inconclusive after suspending the collation of results for Saturday’s governorship and State Assembly elections due to electoral malpractice in the state.
However, INEC explained that the electoral process in the state was called off due to violence and threat to life.
The explanation was contained in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu, Rotimi Oyekanmi.
The statement reads partly: “In Rivers, the Commission was forced to suspend the election due to violence and threats to life, as a result of which it constituted a Fact Finding Committee to assess the situation and report back within 48 hours.
“In a couple of other states where a declaration was not immediately made, the elections did not meet the threshold required for such a declaration.
“The Commission will take the appropriate action prescribed by the law and make a declaration.”
Meanwhile, the governor Wike said the Progress being made regarding Rivers Governorship Election
He said the committee sent by the Headquarters of INEC to attempt by the Nigerian Army to Rivers State Governorship Collation has swung into action.
According to the Wike said the sources at informed that the committee requested duplicate polling from security agencies & party agents who received voting.
“Expectedly at the meeting say that direct Collation of all polling units results have started in earnest”.
“Party agents and different security agencies entitled to duplicate copies have direct Collation”.
“ with 19 Local Government Areas polling units and computed for the Governorship Election in Rivers State, PDP has 586,745, Votes while AAC …51,521 has .”
“After the preliminary investigation and computations, the public would be briefed and open declaration made”.
“ press time, the three other Local Government were ongoing by the Fact Finding Committee. Elections did not hold in the 23rd LGA, Abua/Odual, where soldiers frustrated the distribution of election materials”.
“ to the Polling Units results was in line with the fact that where voting held and Accreditation via card readers took place. Results at this level are pure and verifiable”.
