Rising Tides: Ozekhome Urges Tinubu’s Government to Stem Growing Economic Challenges

In a live broadcast on Channels TV, prominent lawyer and human rights activist, Mike Ozekhome, SAN, asserted that the current administration led by Bola Tinubu has exacerbated the poverty levels in Nigeria. Ozekhome called on President Tinubu and his team to urgently address the economic challenges, emphasizing the need to fulfill the promises of hope made during the 2023 election campaigns.

During the program, Ozekhome dismissed the continual blame on predecessors and urged the present government to adopt innovative strategies to tackle the country’s woes. He expressed concern about the depleting value of the Naira, warning that if not managed carefully, it could reach an alarming exchange rate of N4000 to the dollar by the year-end.

Highlighting a recent $400 million payment, Ozekhome pointed to the rising reserves, reaching $34 billion. However, he criticized the influence of Bureau de Change (BDCs) operating under makeshift conditions, questioning their control over the nation’s economy.

Ozekhome found it particularly embarrassing that officials were still blaming the Jonathan government, which left office almost a decade ago. He emphasized that it was time for a fresh perspective, stating, “I know this is not renewed hope; this is renewed poverty.” According to him, the government needs to reevaluate its approach, suggesting a rethink, innovative thinking, and even considering solutions beyond traditional paradigms.

As economic challenges loom, Ozekhome’s call for a strategic reassessment underscores the urgency for the government to pivot towards effective policies and forward-thinking initiatives.
