Riot in Kano as Hisbah Police, youths clash in Sabon Gari

There was tension in the Sabon Gari area of Kano State as Islamic Police popularly known as Hisbah and the youths clashed over Hisbah storm the area to make arrests of the people.

Violence reportedly erupted on Tuesday evening when irate youths went on the rampage at the Sabon Gari area.

Sabon Gari, inhabited largely by non-indigenes, is the epicentre of ethnic and religious violence in the state.

Security sources told Daily Nigerian that the crisis began when officials of Hisbah went to make an arrest at a red light district of the Ballat Hughes Road.

“At the moment, I can’t tell you specifically what transpired between the Hisbah officials and the youth. All I can say is that the Hisbah operation went awry, and youth started attacking and burning places,” a security agent said.

Witnesses said there was a stampede around Sabon Gari area as bonfires were set by hoodlums.

Some sources noted that some people were killed and many others injured in the clash.

The spokesman for Kano State Police Command, Abdullahi Kiyawa, did not respond to our telephone calls.
