Residents reject resumption of tolling on Lekki Tollgate
Residents of the Lekki area of Lagos under the aegis of the Lekki Estates Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA) have said no to tolling and reopening of the Lekki Tollgate.
The decision of the residents was disclosed by the Nigerian comedian and activist, Debo Adedayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, in a tweet via his official Twitter account.
“We are live at the LCC and StakeHolders Meeting. The Lekki Estate Residents and Stakeholders Association Chairman has announced the decision of all Residents which is NO TO TOLLING!” the skit maker tweeted.
Meanwhile, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, recently disclosed the decision of the government to reopen the Lekki Tollgate by April 1, 2022.
The tollgate where soldiers opened fire on unarmed protesters sitting on the floor and waving the Nigerian flag while singing the national anthem during the October 2020 #EndSARS protests has remained shut in the wake of devastation visited on it.
The thoroughfare is a cash cow to Lagos authorities who are eager to resume business at the plaza, albeit with increasing resistance from aggrieved residents.
