Residents, motorists stranded as bridge collapses in Ekiti community
The bridge links between the Ilawe community in Ekiti South West local government and Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti capital, collapsed on Wednesday after heavy rainfall in the area.
Residents were said to have been stranded, following the collapse of the bridge.
The people and motorists plying the Ilawe-Ado Ekiti routes have lamented the collapse of a bridge at Ilawe Ekiti.
They said the situation had cut off residents from the capital city and called on the state governments to reconstruct the bridge.
Among communities affected by the collapsed bridge are Igbara Odo, Ilawe, and Ado Ekiti as well as those travelling out of the state to Ondo State.
Residents said that the bridge, which caved in on Tuesday evening following downpours, was weakened by persistent erosion, overflow of water, as well increasing movements of heavy-duty vehicles along the road.
Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists to use alternative routes.
SPEO, RC TD OJO made the advice on Wednesday and said development makes it outrightly impossible for vehicles to pass through Ado – Igbaraodo route.
“A bridge at the entry of Ilawe Ekiti from Ado just collapsed and the development makes it outrightly impossible for vehicles to pass through Ado – Igbaraodo route.
“FRSC Officials are on the ground for traffic diversion. This will continue until the needful is done by the appropriate authorities.
“Motorists are advised to use the following alternative routes:
- Ado ➡️ Iyin ➡️Igede ➡️ Ilawe ➡️ Igbaraodo ➡️ Igbaraoke ➡️ Akure
- Ado ➡️ Iju/Itaogbolu ➡️ Akure
