Presidential Primary: Full list of PDP delegates for 36 states, FCT

With the refusal of President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Electoral Act amendment bill, only 811 delegates were permitted to vote in the Presidential special convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

NEWSFLASH NIGERIA learnt that by virtue of Section 84(8) of the Electoral Act, 2022, delegates to vote at the Indirect Primaries and National Convention of political parties to elect candidates for elections shall be those democratically elected for that purpose only.

Recall that, in the PDP constitution, member National convention shall include members of the Board of Trustees, the national chairman and all members of the national executive committee, serving and past presidents, vice presidents, serving and past governors and deputy governors who are members of the party, serving and former principal of the National Assembly and state Assembly, members of the state working committees, all local government chairmen along with one national elected delegates from each of the 774 local government areas and one disability from each of the 36 states.

With the Electoral Act Section 84(8), the law disenfranchised the elected President, Vice President, governors and their deputies, and National Assembly members.

Other statutory delegates that the electoral act screened out during the primaries, as applicable to all the 17 other political parties, including former president and former governors.

Others are the National Working Committee members, state party chairmen and secretaries, local government chairmen, their deputies, councillors and party chairmen in the 774 local government areas.

With the President’s refusal to sign the bill, the number of delegates has dropped to about 811. The 811 consists of one delegate from each of the 774 local governments in the country and one disability delegate from each of the 36 states and FCT.

NEWSFLASH NIGERIA understands that three states; Kano, Katsina and Oyo states have the largest number of delegates due to their large number of local government areas while the Bayelsa State has low delegates of 9 because it has just 8 local government areas.

Kano, which has 44 LGAs will have 45 delegates, Katsina with 34 LGAs will have 35 elected delegates while Oyo with 33 LGAs will have 34 delegates.

Nasarawa – 14

Niger – 26

Ogun – 21

Ondo – 19

Osun – 31

Oyo – 34

Plateau – 18

Rivers – 24

Sokoto – 24

Taraba – 17

Yobe – 18

Zamfara – 15

FCT – 7

Total  = 811 delegates

A breakdown of the 811 delegates for the presidential primaries shows that the North has 439 delegates while the South has 372 delegates.

Also, the North-West zone with seven states and 121 local councils has 193 delegates. It is followed by the South-West, which has six states, 137 local councils and 143 delegates. Both zones account for 336 of the 811 delegates.

Going further, the South-South with six states and 123 local councils will have 129 delegates.

The fourth zone in terms of delegate strength is North-Central (128 delegates). It has 121 local councils drawn from six states and FCT, Abuja. It is followed by the North-East (118 delegates) with six states and 112 local councils.

The least zone is South-East with five states, 96 local councils and 100 delegates.

Among the 14 presidential aspirants still left in the race for the PDP ticket 9 are from the South and five are from the North. Peter Obi had withdrawn from the race leaving southern aspirants remaining 8.

Those aspirants include Sokoto State governor Aminu Tambuwal; a media entrepreneur Dele Momodu; governor of Rivers State Nyesom Wike; banker and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen; governor of Akwa Ibom State Udom Emmanuel; a pharmacist Sam Ohuabunwa, and former Ekiti governor Ayo Fayose.

Others are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; a former Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation and former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, Charles Okwudili, Chikwendu Kalu and a female aspirant, Tareila Diana.
