Police Arrest Sharia Judge, Two Others For Conducting Marriage

Nigerian police Force,NPF in Kaduna State on Monday, November 11, has arrested a Sharia judge, Murtala Nasir, and former chairman of Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Limited (PAN), Alhaji Sani Dauda for allegedly giving out the latter’s daughter, Nasiba Dauda, in marriage twice.

Nasir who is the judge of Magaji gari Sharia Court in Kaduna North Local Government Area, was said to have conducted the marriage on Saturday, November 9, 2019.

Also arrested by the police was Shehu Dauda, one of the sons of Alhaji Sani Dauda.

The Kaduna State Police Command spokesman, DSP Yakubu Sabo, did not take his call at the time of filing this report.

The three of them were arrested on Monday, November 11, and are being detained at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad office of the Kaduna State Police Command.

According to the lawyer to the accused persons, Sani Katu, his clients’ arrest was allegedly masterminded by former husband of Nasiba, one Abubakar, said to be a close associate of the Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Adamu.

He said that Abubakar, who was not happy with the marriage between Nasiba and her new husband, allegedly boasted that he would use his contacts to deal with whoever was involved in contracting the marriage.

Narrating the incident at SARS office, the Sharia court judge explained that they were arrested for conducting a new marriage between Abdulllahi Kaluma and Nasiba Sani Dauda, the daughter of Alhaji Sani Dauda on Saturday, November 9, 2019, after her first marriage with Abubakar Musa Abubakar from Kebbi State was officially nullified on 5th January, 2018.

He explained that the marriage followed due process in line with Islamic laws and the Nigerian Constitution.

On his part, Alhaji Sani Dauda explained that he gave out his daughter to her new husband after she had officially divorced her first husband, Abubakar, since January 2018.

He explained that Abubakar who claimed to have a close relationship with the IGP, vowed to deal with him even when there was an existing divorce certificate between him and his daughter, Nasiba, dated 5th January 2018.

While stating unequivocally that there was no existing order restraining Nasiba or her family from conducting a new marriage after her first marriage with Abubakar failed, the Sharia court judge said that he and Alhaji Sani Dauda were consequently arrested by operatives of the Kaduna State Police Command on the alleged order of the IGP for contracting the marriage between Nasiba and her new husband, Abdullahi Kullama.

“The marriage between Nasiba, the daughter of Alhaji Sani Dauda, the chairman of ASD Motors and her former husband, Abubakar, ended since January 5,2018. And since then, there was no problem, or was there any existing order restraining her or her family from conducting a new marriage.

“So, on Saturday, November 9, I conducted a new marriage between Nasiba and her new husband, Abdullahi Kullama.

“Surprisingly, on Monday November 11, at about 4pm, I was with Alhaji Sani Dauda and many others in his compound when police operatives surrounded the compound, saying they were there to arrest us on the order of the Inspector General of Police, Abubakar Adamu.

“The officers invited us verbally to the police command headquarters without any warrant of arrest.

“Later on, we were transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad office, where we were detained allegedly on the orders of the Inspector General of Police until further notice.”

As at 6am on Tuesday morning, both Sani Dauda and the Sharia court judge were still being detained at the Special Anti- Robbery Squad office with family relations pushing for their prompt release.
