PDP rejects suspension of Ekiti council chairmen, others
The Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State on Wednesday condemned the indefinite suspension of the 16 local government chairmen and 177 councillors in the state by the House of Assembly .
It described the decision as direct assault on the judiciary .
The state Chairman of the party , Chief Gboyega Oguntuwase , said the
party would drag the House of Assembly and the state government to court
if the decision was not reversed .
“ The Supreme Court has ruled that nobody has power to abridge the tenure of elected council chairmen ,” he said.
The Ekiti State House of Assembly had on Tuesday suspended the council chairmen , councillors and other appointed political office holders at the local government level for alleged corruption based on the report of the Public Accounts Committee .
All the affected office holders are PDP members .
Oguntuwase , who spoke at a press conference in Ado Ekiti after the party ’ s State Working Committee meeting , described the suspension as a game plan of the governing All Progressives Congress to throw the PDP in the South-West into confusion .
He said , “ We are alerting the European Union , the United States and the international community that the Ekiti APC is committed to violence . We may head to court if sanity does not prevail and they fail to reverse the illegality .
“ I also want to use this opportunity to alert Nigerians to the intention of the APC to cause confusion and chaos in the South-West . They know that they lost the Ekiti and Osun states governorship elections and that they are weak in the remaining states in the zone .
“ Fayemi has paralysed the local governments . He has not given them any money to run the affairs of the councils since he came to office . He used the back door to achieve his mission of sacking the chairmen by using the state House of Assembly.
