PDP Governors Express Concern over Security Crisis in Plateau and Zamfara

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum has expressed serious concern over the worsening security situation in the country, especially in Plateau and Zamfara States where many lives and properties have been lost to violence.

The governors, who met in Abuja on Tuesday, discussed the security challenges and other national issues during a five-hour closed-door meeting.

The chairman of the forum, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, read a communique after the meeting, calling on the Federal Government and the security agencies to take urgent steps to address the security crisis and restore peace and stability in the affected states.

He said: “We regret the deteriorating security situation in the country, especially the wanton destruction of lives and properties in Plateau and Zamfara States amongst other states.

“We urge the Federal Government and the security agencies to rise to the situation and bring it under control.”

The forum also resolved to work together and unite as a platform for peer review and exchange of ideas on issues, policies, programmes and achievements of PDP governors across the states.

The forum also advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the security agencies and the Federal Government to be neutral in the conduct of the off-season elections in Bayelsa, Kogi and Imo States.

He said: “The aim of the forum is to provide a platform for peer review of issues, policies, programmes and achievements (legacy projects) of member-governors across the PDP states.

“The meeting advised INEC, the security agencies and the Federal Government to be neutral in the conduct of the off-season elections in Bayelsa, Kogi and Imo States.”

Mohammed explained that 12 out of the 13 PDP governors attended the meeting, while Governor Simi Fubara of Rivers State sent his apology.

He said that this showed the unity and solidarity of the forum. He also said that the issue of a substantive national chairman of the party was a matter for discussion at the larger party level, noting that today’s meeting was for governors to familiarize themselves with one another and tackle other pressing national issues.
