Over 1700 Teachers Cry Out Over Three Years of Unpaid Salaries at Federal Unity Colleges

In an open letter addressed to the Nigerian government, over 1700 Education Officers recruited in 2018, 2019, and 2020 at Federal Unity Colleges have voiced their distress over unpaid salary arrears spanning three years.

Despite being officially recognized and captured via the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), these educators have yet to receive their due compensation.

The letter appeals to the conscience of the Permanent Secretary and the Honorable Minister for Education, highlighting the teachers’ pivotal role in shaping society and their struggle to fulfill this duty under financial strain. The educators’ morale is severely affected by hunger, unpaid salaries, and inadequate welfare, which in turn impacts their ability to educate the nation’s youth effectively.

The teachers’ requests are clear and urgent:

  1. An investigation into the delay in processing the files of the affected Education Officers.
  2. The removal of bureaucratic hurdles that impede file movement, verification, and approval for payment.
  3. Immediate commencement of arrears payment, considering the severe economic hardship and inflation affecting the country.

This plea for help is directed at various government offices and committees, including the President, Vice President, and other relevant authorities, with a call for swift action to resolve this pressing issue.

The teachers await a prompt response and intervention, hoping for a resolution that will allow them to continue their essential work without financial worry. Their dedication to education remains steadfast, but they need the support of their government to carry on.

OPEN LETTER FROM 2018, 2019 & 2020 RECRUITED EDUCATION OFFICERS/TEACHERS IN FEDERAL UNITY COLLEGES OF UNPAID THREE(3) YEARS SALARY ARREARS AND OTHER ALLOWANCE.

We are the over 1700 Education Officers (teachers) recruited into the Federal Ministry of Education in year 2018, 2019 & 2020.

We write this open letter with a clear conscience to draw the attention of the Permanent Secretary and Hon. Minister for Education to our plight.

It is worthy of note that we remind you that these set of officers were hitherto owed two years and three years arrears of salary before they were finally captured via IPPIS.

These arrears still remain unpaid as at November 2023.

In our collective resolve, we are requesting for the payment of our long overdue arrears.

As teachers we have not forgotten our role as moulders of society. However, we cannot mould the future of our nation with a dampened morale due to hunger, backlog of salary arrears and poor welfare.

On this note, it is our humble plea that you use your good office to look into the following;

  1. Inquiry into the delay of the movement of files of over 1700 2018, 2019 & 2020 recruited Education Officers.
  2. Speedy Dislodgement of bureaucratic bottlenecks that may delay the movement, verification and approval of files for payment.
  3. That payment of arrears of this category should begin in earnest considering the biting economic hardship and inflation rate in the country.

We make this solemn “Save Our Souls” plea in utmost regard for your highly esteemed office and earnestly seek for your speedy intervention in alleviating our plight within the shortest possible frame.

Thank you as we anticipate your speedy response and intervention.

Yours faithfully

Signed:

2018, 2019 & 2020 Recruited Education Officers/Teachers From The 110 Unity Colleges of Federal Ministry of Education.
