Outrage as Mobile Policeman Beats Up Female Doctor in Delta Hospital, Patients Flee, Doctors Strike
A female youth corper doctor was seriously beaten up by a mobile policeman at the Delta state-owned hospital in Ogwashi Uku, Aniocha south council area of the state.
The incident, which occurred on Thursday night, sparked panic and outrage in the hospital. As a result, other doctors in sympathy with their colleague decided to down tools until the policeman is brought to book by the relevant authorities.
The crisis started when some policemen on escort to a burial ceremony in Ogwashi Uku town brought some injured persons to the hospital following a fracas that ensued at the wake-keeping ceremony.
According to eyewitnesses, one of the policemen became hostile and aggressive despite all efforts made by his colleagues to calm him down.
He started shouting at the female doctor who was attending to the victims inside the emergency ward. He accused her of not treating his brother properly and demanded that she do more.
The doctor and other health workers tried to explain that they had done their best and that all the victims had been treated. But the policeman was not satisfied.
He moved towards the doctor while sitting and gave her a severe blow, kicked and dragged her to the ground until some staff came to her rescue.
The other policemen sensing more danger hurriedly escaped from the scene.
The assault left the doctor with bruises and injuries. She was rushed to another hospital for treatment.
The incident also triggered a protest by other doctors who condemned the action of the policeman as unacceptable and barbaric.
They said they would not resume work until the policeman is arrested and prosecuted for his crime.
They also demanded an apology from the police authorities and adequate compensation for their colleague.
The hospital management confirmed the incident and said it was working with the police to ensure that justice is done.
The state health management board also expressed its displeasure over the incident and said it was addressing the issue of doctors’ protest.
The state police command said it was investigating the incident and that the suspect, a mobile policeman, was not from its command.
It said he was part of a team that accompanied some personalities from outside Delta state to a burial ceremony in Ogwashi Uku.
It assured that no stone would be left unturned in its investigation to fish out the culprit and bring him to book.
