Mob Attacks Policeman For Causing Fatal Accident In Lagos
A mob of angry residents assaulted a policeman who allegedly caused a serious accident in Ketu, Lagos State. The incident occurred on Monday, August 7, 2023, around 4 pm.
According to eyewitnesses, the policeman and his colleagues were trying to seize the vehicle of the victim, identified as Yusuf, for an unknown reason. In the process, they pushed Yusuf out of his car and onto the lane of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
A BRT bus that was heading towards Lagos Island hit Yusuf and crushed him under its wheels. Yusuf suffered severe injuries and lost consciousness on the spot.
The policeman and his colleagues attempted to flee the scene, but the enraged crowd caught one of them and beat him mercilessly. They tore his uniform and left him lying on the ground, barely breathing.
The other policemen managed to escape and later returned with reinforcements from the Ketu Divisional Police Station. They rescued their colleague and took him to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The crowd also prevented the BRT bus driver from leaving the scene. They accused him of being reckless and demanded justice for Yusuf.
Some residents poured water on Yusuf to revive him, but he remained motionless. He was later taken to a hospital by some good Samaritans.
The PUNCH reported that Yusuf had a deep cut on his right arm and was in critical condition.
The incident caused a traffic gridlock in the area, as commuters and motorists were stranded for hours.
Many people expressed their anger and frustration over the incident, blaming the policemen for their brutality and negligence. They called for an investigation and prosecution of the culprits.
Some also sympathized with Yusuf and prayed for his recovery. They urged the government to provide better security and welfare for the citizens.
