The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has arrested fourteen suspected bandits along the Ikere-Ijan Road in Ikere Ekiti, located in the Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
Newsflash Nigeria gathered that the incident occurred on Thursday evening around 8:00 p.m. in the Igbo Ijan farmland area of Ikere Ekiti.
It was reported that, over the past two years, the bandits have caused havoc in the area, destroying farmlands and setting cash crops, such as cocoa, on fire. Their actions have devastated the livelihoods of many farmers, who have repeatedly raised the alarm over the persistent destruction of their crops. Just three months ago, the situation escalated into a full-blown crisis, prompting urgent calls for intervention from community leaders and farmers alike.
In a significant breakthrough, the OPC acted swiftly after residents raised an alarm around 7:00 p.m., alerting the leadership of the Supreme Council of Ikere Youths. The operation led to the capture of the bandits, who were found in possession of dangerous weapons.
The arrested bandits have been handed over to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the Ikere Ilupeju Police Station for further interrogation and investigation.
Speaking on the incident, the Asoju Oba of Ikere Kingdom, who also serves as the President of the Supreme Council of Ikere Youths, Chief Akin Afuye, urged the government and security agencies to expedite work on the construction of an army barracks in the town. He emphasized that such a project would help restore peace and provide lasting security for the community, which has suffered immensely from the activities of these criminal groups.
Meanwhile, the Ogoga of Ikere Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Oba Adejimi Adu Alagbado, Agirilala II, called on security authorities to ensure the arrested individuals face the full weight of the law. He stressed that they should serve as a deterrent to others who may consider engaging in similar acts of terror. “Let them serve as scapegoats and be recorded in history as a warning to others who may consider endangering the peace of Ikere Kingdom,” the monarch firmly stated.
This decisive action highlights the commitment of the OPC, traditional rulers, and community authorities to safeguarding lives and property in Ikere Ekiti. Farmers and residents are optimistic that this marks the end of the constant attacks on their farmlands and the beginning of lasting peace in the community.
