Online publishers blow hot, threaten National Assembly over new media rules
A group, Network of Nigerian On-Line Publishers, NENOP, has rejected in totality, the new accreditation guidelines released by the National Assembly, NASS, management on Monday.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, through his aide on Social Media, Olu Onemola, had vowed that the Senate will investigate the new guidelines.
However, NENOP, in a statement signed by its National President, Moji Danisa, said, “We condemn the new rules for media houses and online Publishers covering the National Assembly, NASS.
“The rules are draconian, incredulous, vexatious, and in total disrespect for the noble profession of Journalism.
“We believe that the plan of the NASS going by the new guidelines, is to alienate itself and shroud it’s activities in secrecy.”
NENOP further urged all media houses to reject “this archaic approach to gag the press even as we are in a democracy”.
It added, “We must note that the press as the fourth estate of the realm must be respected by the three arms of government.
“If the NASS insists on going ahead with these guidelines, they must be ready for total press blackout.”
